5th Annual Pioneer Valley Farm Products Guide
Kicks Off 2001 Local Hero Campaign

127 Farms, Ag. Event Calendar and Farmers Market List featured

(Amherst, MA) — Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) announces that its 5th Annual Pioneer Valley Farm Products Guide will be available throughout the Pioneer Valley in late April and early May. The Guide lists 127 farms in Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden Counties that sell farm products directly to the public. New in this year’s edition is a complete listing of area farmers markets, an agriculture event calendar and a comprehensive listing of area community supported agriculture (CSA) farms.

"We are excited to be offering this tremendous resource to the community," says Mark Lattanzi, Guide Coordinator. "This is the first time that we’ve covered all three Pioneer Valley counties in one guide, with the most farms — 127 — ever listed. The Guide is an amazing example of the diversity and creativity of Valley farms." The types of locally grown farm products listed range from apples and Asian vegetables to nursery plants, hard cider, farmstead cheese, berries, lumber, maple syrup, sweet corn, fiber products and much more.

Area residents can also find detailed information on dates, times and locations of farmers markets throughout the Valley, as well as a listing of some of the best agricultural events and festivals around. Consumers wishing to ‘subscribe’ to a local CSA farm will find information on over a dozen CSA farms scattered throughout the region.

"The Guide is a great way to get geared up for the upcoming growing season," says Lattanzi. "Consumers can find so many ways to buy locally grown farm products, from day trips to agriculture festivals to leisurely visits to farmers markets and farm stands. With most farmers markets and farm stands opening in late April and early May, the timing couldn’t be better for the Guide."

The Guide will be inserted in the area’s major newspapers on the following schedule:

The Daily Hampshire Gazette, Thursday, April 26.
The Recorder, Friday, April 27.
The Union-News, Friday, April 27.
The Amherst Bulletin, Friday, April 27.
Additional copies of the Guide will be available — free of charge — at area Chambers of Commerce and visitor information centers by mid-May. Area residents can have a copy mailed to them by sending $1 for postage and handling to CISA, 893 West Street, Amherst MA 01002, ATTN: Farm Guide. An electronic version of the Guide will be available in May at the CISA web site, www.buylocalfood.com.

The 5th Annual Farm Products Guide was produced with the support of the Hampden County Farm Bureau, the Daily Hampshire Gazette and the Bank of Western Massachusetts. CISA is a community organization comprised of farmers, consumers and professionals working together to sustain agriculture and the unique rural character of our communities. CISA is the creator of the ‘Be a Local Hero, Buy Locally Grown’ marketing campaign to promote the purchase of local agricultural products by local consumers. CISA also operates FarmNet, a free information and referral service for farmers and others with questions about farming and agriculture in western Massachusetts, available toll-free, 1-800-627-3002 or 549-1483.
